Placerita Canyon Nature Center

Canyon park where California's first gold was found in 1842

Address 19152 Placerita Canyon Road, Newhall, CA 91321

A quiet canyon park that played a small but real role in California history — gold was first discovered here in 1842, six years before the more famous Sutter's Mill find. The Nature Center has displays on local ecology and the canyon's history, and several hiking trails wind through oak woodland and chaparral. It's a pleasant escape from the Valley heat and a much gentler outing than Six Flags.
