Vasquez Rocks

Dramatic tilted sandstone formations famous as a filming location since the 1930s

The most recognisable geological formation in all of Hollywood, Vasquez Rocks is a county natural area park where massive slabs of sandstone jut from the earth at dramatic angles — the result of ancient fault movement along the Elkhorn Fault. The tilted formations have appeared in hundreds of films and television episodes since the 1930s, most famously as the setting for Captain Kirk's fight scenes in Star Trek, and more recently in The Flintstones, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and countless Westerns.

The park has several short hiking trails that wind between and over the formations. Sunrise and late-afternoon light turns the sandstone a deep amber. It's also a good stargazing site, dark enough to see the Milky Way on clear nights. About twenty minutes east of the main Santa Clarita valley, it is a natural extension of a day that includes Placerita Canyon or the Hart estate.

A story
Tiburcio Vásquez, one of California's most wanted bandits in the 1860s and 70s, used these rocks as a hideout while evading the Los Angeles County Sheriff. When he was finally captured in 1874 — in a Hollywood bungalow, betrayed by a romantic rival — he was hanged in San Jose. The rocks still bear his name.
