Bidwell Park is Chico's defining feature — a ribbon of green that stretches nine miles from downtown up into the oak-studded foothills, following Chico Creek through several distinct environments. The lower park, easily reached on foot from the university, has lawns, picnic areas, a golf course, and a children's playground. The creek widens into swimmable pools in the middle section, most famously at One-Mile and Five-Mile Recreation Areas, where locals come to cool off all summer. The upper park is wilder: undeveloped chaparral and canyon terrain good for hiking, mountain biking, and spotting deer and wild turkeys.
The valley oaks in the lower park are enormous — some are thought to be several hundred years old — and the canopy they form over the main road is a Chico institution. The park is free and open year-round. Summer weekends bring crowds to the swimming holes; early mornings in spring the park is almost entirely yours.
