Robert Louis Stevenson Silverado Museum

A small museum devoted to the life and work of Robert Louis Stevenson, run by the local library and housed in a single room off Library Lane. The collection includes first editions, manuscripts, letters, photographs, and personal effects — including the lead soldiers Stevenson played with as a child in Edinburgh. The connection to St. Helena is the 1880 honeymoon Stevenson spent on the flank of nearby Mount St. Helena.

The museum is free, small, and easily seen in twenty minutes. For anyone interested in Stevenson it is one of the best collections in the world outside Edinburgh; for casual visitors it is a pleasant pause from wine tasting. Closed Mondays.

A story
Stevenson spent his 1880 honeymoon with the recently divorced Californian Fanny Osbourne in an abandoned bunkhouse at the silver mining ghost town of Silverado on the slopes of Mount St. Helena above the valley — a stay he wrote up in *The Silverado Squatters*, the book that established his reputation as a travel writer.
