The two anchors of a Cripple Creek visit are the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine and the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad — both are the real thing, not recreations, and both deliver. Beyond them, the Cripple Creek District Museum fills in the gold rush story with a strong collection, while Mt. Pisgah Cemetery above town offers sweeping views and the kind of weathered headstones that reward a slow wander. The companion town of Victor, four miles south, is less polished and more authentic than Cripple Creek itself; its downtown historic district survives largely intact and the streets are almost empty, which is part of the point.
