The Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel is the grand white landmark above Estes Park, opened in 1909 by F. O. Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame. Its porch, red roof, and mountain backdrop make it the town's most recognizable building.

The hotel is also famous for inspiring Stephen King's The Shining, and it leans into the ghost-story side of its reputation. Even if you skip the tours, it is worth stopping for the view and the odd contrast between resort elegance and high-country weather.
