Estes Park

Colorado mountain town at Rocky Mountain National Park's busy eastern entrance.

Estes Park is the mountain town at the eastern door of Rocky Mountain National Park. It sits in a high valley at about 7,500 feet, surrounded by granite peaks, pine forest, and meadows where elk wander with very little concern for traffic.

The town is touristy, and in summer it can feel crowded enough to test anyone's patience. Still, the setting is too good to dismiss. Trail Ridge Road climbs from town into tundra, Bear Lake and Moraine Park sit close by inside the national park, and the Lake Estes Trail gives a gentler loop when altitude or weather argues against a bigger hike.

Estes also has its own strange landmark in The Stanley Hotel, a grand white hotel above town with literary fame and mountain views. The best way to enjoy Estes Park is to accept what it is: a busy base with superb access. Start early, leave the main streets when they jam, and let the mountains do the work.
