Manitou Penny Arcade

The Manitou Penny Arcade has been operating on Manitou Avenue since the 1890s, and despite everything, it still works exactly as it always did. You exchange cash for tokens and feed them into machines that are, in several cases, genuinely antique: fortune tellers, strength testers, shooting galleries, and a Mutoscope (a hand-cranked flip-book movie viewer) that predates cinema. The more modern video games sit alongside them but feel slightly out of place.

It is free to enter and you can wander through without spending anything, but the whole point is to pick a few machines that catch your eye and spend a dollar or two finding out what happens. The space is dim, slightly cramped, and noisy with mechanical clicks and fairground music — which is precisely what makes it good. Open daily, later in summer.
