Ouray is on US Route 550, the Million Dollar Highway — one of the most dramatic paved roads in the United States, cutting through the San Juan Mountains between Ouray and Silverton with sheer drops and no guardrails on many stretches. Coming from the south (Silverton, Durango) the road is breathtaking; coming from the north (Montrose) it is less dramatic but straightforward.
There is no scheduled public transportation to Ouray. The nearest Amtrak station is Glenwood Springs, about 250 kilometers north. Most visitors drive, and the road from Montrose to Ouray (50 kilometers on US 550) is the main approach from the north. In winter, US 550 can be closed during and after heavy snow; check road conditions before attempting the passes. The Ridgway Airport, 25 kilometers north, handles small charter aircraft.
