Pagosa Springs sits in southwest Colorado where the San Juan River cuts through town and hot mineral water rises straight out of the ground. It is less polished than the famous Colorado resort towns, and that is part of the appeal: you get mountain air, a real downtown, and a soak without needing to pretend you are in Aspen.
The hot springs are the obvious draw, but they are not the only reason to stop. The river walk runs past steaming pools and wetlands, Wolf Creek Pass is close enough for skiing and summer drives, and Chimney Rock National Monument adds a serious Ancestral Puebloan site to the day-trip list.
Use Pagosa as a slow mountain base rather than a checklist town. Soak early or late, walk the river, and leave enough time for the forest roads, waterfalls, and high-country weather that make this corner of Colorado feel big.
