Pueblo is southern Colorado's old steel city, set where Fountain Creek meets the Arkansas River. It does not have Denver's gloss or Colorado Springs' mountain drama, but it has a stronger local flavour than either: working-class history, Mexican and immigrant food traditions, public art, and a stubborn pride in the Pueblo chile.
The best introduction is the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk, a revived downtown waterway that turned flood-control history into a walkable civic centre. Nearby are the El Pueblo History Museum, the glowing signs of Neon Alley, and the galleries and children's museum at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center.
Pueblo also works outdoors. Lake Pueblo State Park has big-water boating, fishing, and dry-country trails just west of town. Give Pueblo a day and it stops looking like a highway exit between better-known Colorado places.
