The ski season runs from mid-November to mid-April, with peak conditions typically in January and February when snowpack is at its deepest and temperatures stay reliably cold. The Back Bowls particularly need substantial snow to ski well — an early December visit can mean excellent front-side skiing but limited bowl access.
March is the most popular month: spring skiing conditions, longer daylight hours, and warm enough afternoons to ski in a single layer. The mountain stays open late in the season when conditions allow.
Summer (late June through September) is increasingly popular for hiking, mountain biking, and the outdoor concert season. July and August are warm at valley level (20–25°C) but cool on the mountain. The Bravo! Vail music festival in June and the free afternoon concerts in Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater draw visitors who might not consider Vail for skiing alone.
Avoid spring mud season (typically mid-April to late May) when the mountain is closed, the valley is brown, and most restaurants reduce hours.
