Middletown is a university town, and the sights reflect that: grand 19th-century architecture, a fine Wesleyan campus, and an unusually good collection of historic houses along High Street. The Connecticut River gives the city its western edge and is more accessible here than in most places along its length. Main Street has enough cafes and bookshops to occupy an afternoon.
