By train is the most practical way to reach New Haven from New York or Boston. Metro-North's New Haven Line runs from Grand Central Terminal in New York to New Haven Union Station, with express trains taking about 1 hour 40 minutes; local trains take longer. Amtrak also serves New Haven on its Northeast Corridor route, with trains from New York Penn Station taking about 1 hour 45 minutes and from Boston South Station around 2 hours 30 minutes. Union Station on Union Avenue is a handsome Beaux-Arts building about a 15-minute walk from the Green, or a short cab ride.
By car, New Haven sits at the junction of I-91 (north to Hartford, south via I-95 toward New York) and I-95 along the coast. Parking garages are available downtown. Traffic on I-95 between New Haven and New York can be severe on weekends.
By air, the nearest major airports are Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, about 45 minutes north, and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, about 2 hours by car or train. Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) handles limited regional service.
