The 1,600-seat Shubert at 247 College Street opened in 1914 and has been a major pre-Broadway tryout house ever since. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! had its world premiere here in 1943; so did Elia Kazan's staging of A Streetcar Named Desire and Death of a Salesman. Today the theatre presents touring Broadway productions, concerts, and dance. The building was renovated in 1983 and remains an active anchor of the performing arts scene in downtown New Haven.
