At the corner of Second and Mulberry streets, the Ryves Holt House is a low, dark-shingled gambrel-roofed building that does not look like much from the street. It is older than the rest of Lewes by a century. The dating is contested but the consensus puts construction to around 1665, which makes it the oldest surviving house in Delaware. The Lewes Historical Society uses it now as the town's visitor information centre — go in, pick up the walking-tour map, and notice the ceiling beams are roughly seven inches lower than in a modern house.
It is free, takes ten minutes, and is the right place to begin a walk through the historic district.
