A cluster of bars and pubs runs along Main Street, ranging from the historic Deer Park Tavern — the oldest and most atmospheric, with live music some nights — to newer college sports bars showing games on big screens. The strip is the social heart of Newark's student life and gets genuinely lively Thursday through Saturday during term time. Outside of the academic year it is a much quieter place.
