Junction and Breakwater Trail

The Junction and Breakwater Trail is a six-mile rail trail that runs from Rehoboth Beach to Lewes through Cape Henlopen State Park. Built on the former right-of-way of the Rehoboth Beach and Lewes Railway, it offers a flat, paved route through coastal forest and dune habitat that is ideal for cycling, walking, and rollerblading.

The trail passes through one of the more ecologically interesting stretches of the Delaware coast: maritime forest, inland bays, and wetlands that support a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Osprey are common overhead in summer; shorebirds work the edges of the ponds in migration season.

Bikes can be rented from several shops near the Rehoboth end of the trail. The full six-mile route to Lewes takes about 30 to 40 minutes each way on a bike; the return journey from Lewes can be combined with the Cape May-Lewes Ferry crossing and a one-way route along the coast if you have the time. This is one of the better cycling excursions on the Delmarva Peninsula.
