Moccasin Lake Nature Park

Moccasin Lake Nature Park is a 51-acre nature preserve tucked into a residential part of Clearwater, about 10 minutes inland from the beach. The park has boardwalk trails through oak hammock and wetland habitats, a small interpretive center with live reptile exhibits, and a raptor sanctuary that houses permanently injured birds of prey including red-tailed hawks and barred owls.

The park opened in 1982 and feels like a forgotten corner of old Florida — Spanish moss hangs from the oaks, turtles sun themselves on logs in the lake, and the trails are quiet even on busy beach weekends. There is a butterfly garden and a small playground near the entrance. Admission is free. It is a good option when you want a break from the sun and sand, or when afternoon storms roll in and the beaches empty out.
