Pinellas Trail

The Pinellas Trail passes through Clearwater on its 47-mile route from Tarpon Springs in the north to St. Petersburg in the south. The paved path is flat, well-maintained, and popular with cyclists, joggers, and inline skaters. The Clearwater section runs through downtown and connects to several parks and neighborhoods along the way.

You can pick up the trail at multiple points in Clearwater, including near the downtown library and along several cross streets. Bike rental shops in the area cater to trail users. Heading north from Clearwater, the trail passes through Dunedin, a compact downtown with breweries and restaurants that makes a good halfway stop. The full Clearwater-to-Tarpon Springs stretch is about 10 miles one way and ends near the famous Greek sponge docks.

A story
The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail follows the former route of the Orange Belt Railway, which ran from Sanford to St. Petersburg in the 1880s. When the rail line was abandoned, Pinellas County converted the corridor into a paved multi-use trail that now stretches 47 miles from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg, making it one of the longest urban trails in the southeastern United States.
