The Blue Anchor

A working English pub on Atlantic Avenue, transplanted in pieces from London and probably the only one of its kind in South Florida. The interior is dark wood, etched glass, and Tudor-style fittings — straight out of central London — and the menu sticks to the script: fish and chips, bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, beef Wellington. The beer selection is heavy on British and Irish taps, with cask ales on rotation.

Live music most evenings, often Celtic and folk. The pub is busiest on Sunday afternoons during football (soccer) Premier League matches, when the place fills with English ex-pats. Open late by Delray standards — kitchen until 11pm, bar until midnight.

A story
The pub really was shipped from London. The original Blue Anchor stood on Chancery Lane from 1864 and was dismantled in 1996; the bar, woodwork, windows, lamps and signage were crated, freighted to Florida, and reassembled on Atlantic Avenue. A local owner who had grown up drinking there bought it, hoping to recreate his pub in retirement. The ghost stories — there are several — also reputedly made the crossing.
