Lake Mirror

Lake Mirror is the prettiest of Lakeland's chain of downtown lakes, a small urban water body ringed by a neoclassical promenade with ornate balustrades and mature live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. The lakeside walk is genuinely lovely — flat, shaded, and with good views across the water towards the downtown skyline. It is the kind of public space that Florida rarely does this well.

The lake is in the heart of downtown, walking distance from restaurants and the Polk Museum of Art. In the late afternoon or early evening, when the light hits the water and the oaks cast long shadows, it is a particularly pleasant place to be. The annual Lake Mirror Classic Antique Auto Festival in October draws vintage car enthusiasts from around the state.

A story
The neoclassical balustrade and promenade around Lake Mirror were built in 1928 as part of a civic beautification program during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. Lakeland's city planners envisioned a park system connecting the chain of sixteen lakes in and around the downtown — Lake Mirror was the centrepiece. The boom collapsed before all the plans were realised, but the promenade and the lake have remained the social heart of downtown Lakeland ever since.
