St. Joseph Sound is the protected water between Palm Harbor, Dunedin, and the Gulf barrier islands. It is one of the area's best paddling environments, with mangrove edges, spoil islands, dolphins, wading birds, and views toward Honeymoon and Caladesi islands.
Access depends on where you launch, but the sound is worth seeking out if you prefer kayaks and birds to beach umbrellas. Winds can make open crossings choppy, so stay conservative unless you know the water.
