Getting There

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is one of the best-run airports in Florida, routinely rated among the top in the US for passenger experience. It sits about 6 miles west of downtown and receives direct flights from most major US cities and several international destinations. A taxi to downtown takes 20–30 minutes; the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) bus service connects the airport to downtown but requires a transfer and is slower.

By car, Tampa is reachable via I-75 from the north (Atlanta, 6.5 hours) and south (Miami, 4.5 hours), and I-4 from Orlando (90 minutes) and the east coast. Traffic on I-4 west of Orlando and on I-275 approaching downtown can be severe during rush hours.

By train, Amtrak's Silver Star and Silver Meteor routes connect Tampa to New York (about 24 hours), Washington DC (about 18 hours), and Miami (about 4.5 hours). The Amtrak station is at 601 Nebraska Avenue, a short distance from downtown. Train travel is comfortable but slow by American standards; flying is usually faster for distances over 6 hours.

From St. Petersburg, the cross-bay Howard Frankland or Gandy bridges connect the two cities; the journey by car takes about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
