The Anclote River flows into the Gulf of Mexico just north of the Sponge Docks, passing through mangrove forest, tidal flats, and estuaries that are among the most intact stretches of Gulf coast between Tampa and Clearwater. The river and its tributaries form an excellent kayaking and paddleboarding network accessible to anyone of moderate fitness.
Several outfitters near the Sponge Docks rent kayaks and paddleboards by the hour or day and can provide maps of the main routes. The most popular is the circuit out to Anclote Key, a state preserve island about three miles offshore with a historic lighthouse, sand beaches, and excellent shelling. The island has no facilities, so bring water and food.
Wildlife on the water is excellent: ospreys, pelicans, dolphins, and manatees (especially November to March, when the warmer water of the river draws them in from the Gulf). The area is a genuine natural asset that most visitors to Tarpon Springs walk past on the way to the Sponge Docks.
