Spongeorama is a small museum and sponge shop at the Sponge Docks that tells the history of the natural sponge industry in Tarpon Springs. The exhibits cover how Greek immigrants arrived in the early 1900s, how the diving technology evolved from hard-hat suits to lighter equipment, and how sponge harvesting works from ocean floor to market.
It is not a grand museum — the space is modest and some exhibits are showing their age — but the subject is genuinely interesting and the short film about sponge diving gives context that makes a visit to the working docks more meaningful. The attached shop sells natural sponges in every size and grade, and they are cheaper here than anywhere else on the docks.
Worth 30 minutes, especially if you are visiting with children. Admission is free.
