The Jackson Street Cemetery, also called Old Athens Cemetery, is the oldest burial ground in Athens and one of the more atmospheric spots in town. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains graves from the earliest years of the city's existence, including several notable Georgians from the antebellum era.
The cemetery is small and shaded by old trees, with headstones ranging from elaborate carved marble to simple fieldstone markers. It's an easy walk from downtown and makes a quiet counterpoint to the busier campus and bar district nearby. If you have an interest in Southern history or funerary architecture, it's worth fifteen minutes.
