Jimmy Carter Peanut Statue

A 13-foot fibreglass peanut with a comically wide grin, standing in a grassy lot just east of downtown. Built in 1976 by Indiana Democrats for a campaign stop in Evansville, then shipped to Plains as a gift from the state party. The teeth are sized and shaped to mimic Carter's smile.

It is unironically loved by the town and has become Plains' most photographed object. A small parking area lets you pull off and take the obligatory picture; allow five minutes.

A story
The 13-foot grinning peanut was built by Indiana Democrats for a 1976 Carter campaign rally in Evansville. After the rally it was donated to Plains, which had nowhere obvious to put it; it spent decades being moved around town before settling at its current spot on US 280. Its giant teeth are a deliberate caricature of Carter's famous smile.
