Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area

Grand Bay is a large freshwater wetland system east of Valdosta, managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The bay itself — an unusual geologic feature, likely a Carolina bay — supports dense populations of wading birds, wood ducks, sandhill cranes, and during migration, a wide variety of shorebirds. There are gravel roads and basic walking trails through the longleaf pine flatwoods that border the bay. It's a raw, undeveloped area with no visitor facilities to speak of, which is part of the appeal if you've been driving I-75. Early morning is far better for wildlife than midday. Hunting is permitted seasonally, so check the DNR calendar before visiting.
