Kamaole Beach Parks

Kamaole I, II, and III are three linked beach parks in the centre of Kihei, the best swimming beaches on this stretch of coast and the social heart of the town. Each has a slightly different character: Kamaole I is the widest and most popular; Kamaole II is quieter with good shade trees; Kamaole III has the best playground and a grassy lawn area popular with families. All three have lifeguards, restrooms, and parking.

The snorkelling is good at the rocky points between the parks, where fish congregate around the reef. In winter, humpback whales are visible offshore from any of the three parks — you can hear them too if the water is calm. The beaches face west, which makes for excellent sunsets. Bring reef shoes; the rocky entry points can be sharp.

A story
The three Kamaole parks were created as public beach parks in the 1950s specifically to ensure that the growing resort development along Kihei's coast could not privatise the beaches. Hawaii's Beach Access Law, which guarantees public access to all beaches regardless of adjacent private ownership, means that these parks are genuinely open and free — a deliberate counterbalance to the condo development that surrounds them.
