Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge protects one of Maui's last natural wetlands, a broad seasonal pond between Kihei and Maalaea. It is an important feeding and nesting area for endangered Hawaiian stilts and Hawaiian coots, and in winter the open water draws migratory ducks and shorebirds. The refuge gives South Maui a quieter counterpoint to beaches and snorkelling boats.
The easiest visit is the coastal boardwalk and viewing area, where you can look over the pond without trampling fragile habitat. Conditions change with the season: after rain the wetland feels expansive and bird-rich, while in dry months the pond can shrink dramatically. Bring binoculars if you have them, and come early or late in the day when the light is softer and the birds are more active.
