Freak Alley Gallery

Tucked in the alley that runs between 9th and 8th Streets off Bannock, Freak Alley is one of the most dynamic public art spaces in the Mountain West. Every summer, the back walls of a full city block are repainted from scratch by invited muralists — local, regional, and national — creating a constantly shifting gallery that rewards multiple visits across different years.

The work is serious rather than decorative: large-scale, technically accomplished, and often political. It is free to walk through at any hour, and the alley fills with visitors on summer evenings when the light is good. Boise First Thursdays, when galleries stay open late, coincides with some of the busiest nights at Freak Alley.

A story
Freak Alley began in 2002 when a handful of local artists were given permission to paint the back walls of a block of buildings in the downtown core. It has since grown into the largest outdoor mural gallery in the Pacific Northwest, repainted entirely by different artists each summer so the work never grows stale.
