Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock is a 48-foot-tall rhyolite formation west of Twin Falls near the town of Castleford that looks like it should have fallen over centuries ago. The main body of the rock weighs an estimated 40 tons and sits on a pedestal barely three feet wide and seventeen inches deep. The surrounding landscape is sagebrush desert, and the rock stands completely isolated, which only adds to the absurdity of its position.

The site is a state park with a small picnic area and a paved path around the rock. The drive there takes about thirty minutes from Twin Falls through flat agricultural land, and then the rock appears suddenly at the edge of a canyon. The Salmon Falls Creek reservoir below the canyon offers fishing and a contrast to the main attraction. This is a classic Idaho roadside oddity — worth the detour if you have an afternoon to spare.
