Twin Falls

Snake River Canyon city in southern Idaho, with Shoshone Falls dropping just east of town.

Twin Falls sits on the rim of the Snake River Canyon in south-central Idaho, and the scenery here is genuinely dramatic. Shoshone Falls, just east of town, drops 212 feet, making it higher than Niagara, and on a spring day with full water flow it is spectacular. The falls are best visited between April and July before irrigation draws down the river level. There is a modest park entrance fee, and the viewing platforms give you a good look at the whole cascade.

The Perrine Bridge spanning the Snake River Canyon is the other big attraction, and it is one of the few places in the United States where you can legally BASE jump year-round without a permit. On any given afternoon, you can watch jumpers leap from the bridge 486 feet above the canyon floor. Even if you have no intention of jumping yourself, it is mesmerizing to watch, and the canyon views from the bridge are excellent.

Twin Falls is a small agricultural city that serves as the commercial hub for the Magic Valley. The Herrett Center for Arts and Science on the College of Southern Idaho campus holds one of the Pacific Northwest's strongest pre-Columbian artifact collections — an unexpected find for a town this size. The downtown has been sprucing up in recent years with some good local restaurants and a growing craft brewery scene. The town makes a natural stopping point on a drive across southern Idaho, and if you are heading to Sun Valley or the Sawtooths, it breaks the journey nicely.
