Getting Around

Springfield is a car city and most visitors drive. The Lincoln sites in the downtown historic district are within easy walking distance of each other — the Lincoln Home, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Old State Capitol, and Lincoln Depot are all within half a mile. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library is a five-minute walk from the historic district.

Lincoln's Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery and the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon in Washington Park are about two miles from downtown — easy by car, manageable by bike, less convenient on foot. The Cozy Dog Drive In is on South Sixth Street, part of the original Route 66 alignment through the city. Springfield has a local bus system but it is infrequent and not oriented toward tourist sites. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber and Lyft operate here) are the most practical alternatives to a car. Most of the downtown sites have adjacent parking lots.
