Warsaw

Northern Indiana lake city where summer boating meets the world's orthopaedic manufacturing industry

Warsaw is a small city of about 15,000 in northern Indiana's lake country, surrounded by more than 100 lakes. The largest, Winona Lake and Center Lake, sit right against the town, and in summer the place revolves around boating, fishing, and swimming.

Warsaw is also — improbably — the orthopaedic manufacturing capital of the world. Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes, and other major medical device companies are headquartered here, a legacy of one man's decision to start making splints in the town in 1895. The OrthoWorx campus tells this story if you are curious. Winona Lake village has a remarkable extra layer of history: it was once one of the most famous evangelical resort communities in America, home to firebrand preacher Billy Sunday, whose preserved home is open for tours.

Things to Do

Warsaw is primarily a lake town — in summer, most activity centres on Winona Lake and Center Lake. The OrthoWorx campus on the history of the orthopedic industry is unexpectedly interesting. Winona Lake village, a short drive from downtown, has a restored historic character quite different from the main city and is worth an afternoon.
