Cutler-Donahoe Bridge

79-foot covered bridge relocated into Winterset City Park

The most accessible of the six covered bridges, parked inside Winterset City Park rather than out in the fields. Seventy-nine feet of pine timbers under a flat-pitched roof, painted the standard barn red. The setting — a city park with a playground and picnic shelters — strips away some of the romance of seeing one at the end of a gravel road, but it makes for a good orientation stop before driving the loop.

Walk through, photograph the framing of the trusses, then head out to find the others where they stand.

A story
Built in 1870 across the North River, the bridge was moved into Winterset City Park in 1970 to save it from the floods that had already destroyed two of its neighbours.
