The reason to come is the covered bridges — six of them, built between 1870 and 1884 to span the creeks that run through the rolling farmland south of Des Moines. A signed driving loop strings them together; allow half a day. The town of Winterset, the county seat, also holds the John Wayne Birthplace and a square of nineteenth-century brick storefronts that has barely changed in a century.
