The Victorian courthouse at the centre of Winterset's town square, built of local limestone in 1876 with a clock tower that you can climb. The square around it, lined with two-storey brick storefronts, is a designated historic district and one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century courthouse squares in Iowa.
A small staircase inside takes you up to a viewing balcony at the base of the cupola; on a clear day you can see four counties of corn and soybean fields rolling away in every direction.
