Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad

Heritage steam and diesel train along the Smoky Hill River to Enterprise

A non-profit heritage railway running on a stretch of the old Rock Island line south from the restored 1887 depot in downtown Abilene to the village of Enterprise, about 10 miles down the Smoky Hill River. The flagship locomotive is a 1945 Alco S-1 diesel, with steam-hauled trips on selected weekends and themed runs around Halloween (the "Ghost Train") and Christmas. The two-and-a-half-hour round trip includes a stop at the wooden Enterprise depot.

The Abilene end is integrated with the surrounding heritage sites — the restored Rock Island depot houses the ticket office, and the line passes the old stockyards where Texas longhorns once disembarked off the Chisholm Trail. Tickets are inexpensive and the rolling stock includes open-air gondola cars. Operating season runs May through October, with limited winter specials.
