Dodge City is one of the few Old West names that still lands before you arrive. The modern city is a working western Kansas town, with meatpacking plants, highways, and a large Latino community, but the tourist core is built around the cattle-trail years when Dodge was the "Queen of the Cow Towns."
The headline stop is the Boot Hill Museum, a reconstructed Front Street and cemetery that leans into the legend without pretending it is subtle. Nearby, the Mueller-Schmidt House gives a quieter look at the people who stayed after the saloon stories moved on.
Dodge City works best as a road-trip stop across the plains. Visit the museum, drive out to Fort Dodge and the Coronado Cross, and you will get both sides of the place: the noisy frontier myth and the older routes across the Arkansas River.
