Smoky Hill Museum

Free downtown museum interpreting Salina, the Smoky Hills, and central Kansas history.

Smoky Hill Museum is the best first stop in Salina. It covers the settlement, work, weather, and community life of central Kansas, with enough local specificity to keep it from becoming a generic prairie-history display.

Admission is free, and the downtown location makes it easy to combine with a walk along Santa Fe Avenue. Give it an hour if you want context before heading back onto the highway.

A story
The museum occupies Salina's former post office, a Depression-era federal building that gives the exhibits more dignity than a storefront could. It is a good example of how small-city museums often preserve both objects and civic memory.
