The ranch area and visitor center are easy to walk, but the preserve's wider trail network covers open, uneven country. Pick up a current trail map before setting out, because bison operations, prescribed fire, mud, and maintenance can close routes.
Dogs are allowed only on designated trails, and backcountry hiking is foot traffic only. Summer heat and wind can be harsher than the distances suggest, so carry water even for short loops.
