The preserve sits on Kansas Highway 177, the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, about two miles north of Strong City and a short drive from Cottonwood Falls. There is no useful public transport; you need a car, and the drive itself is part of the appeal.
From Wichita or Kansas City, allow roughly two hours, depending on traffic and which side of the metro you start from. Emporia is the nearest larger service town, with fuel, food, and lodging.
