Spring Hill Ranch

Spring Hill Ranch is the preserve's historic anchor, a stone ranch house and limestone barn set into the rolling grass just above the visitor center. It gives human scale to the place: cattle, fences, wealth, work, and the long argument between ranching and wild prairie.

The buildings are worth lingering over before you hike. Their thick stone walls and careful placement make more sense once you feel the wind and heat outside.

A story
The ranch complex was built in the 1880s when cattle wealth was remaking the Flint Hills. Its handsome limestone buildings now tell a quieter story: the same ranching economy that altered the prairie also helped keep these hills open enough for prairie restoration a century later.
