Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site gathers several strands of Topeka history into one walkable place: a Victorian house, relocated historic buildings, a general-store atmosphere, gardens, and small exhibits. It is a curated village rather than a preserved town, but it does a good job of making local history tangible.
The site works best in good weather, when the botanical garden and outdoor buildings are part of the visit. It is a worthwhile companion to Topeka's heavier civic and civil-rights sights, especially for families or anyone interested in settlement-era Kansas.
