Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are the best times to visit. Temperatures are mild, the hills are green, and Mammoth Cave is at its most pleasant for touring. Summer brings genuine heat and humidity — July and August average in the mid-90s°F (34°C) and feel hotter. Winter is mild by Midwestern standards but cool and grey. Western Kentucky University's football season (fall) brings energy to the city on game days, with a reasonable atmosphere downtown after matches.
