Barksdale Air Force Base

Barksdale dominates the southeastern half of Bossier City; the base is bigger than the city itself by acreage, and the rumble of B-52s is part of the local soundtrack. Casual visitors cannot just drive on, but the Barksdale Global Power Museum (when open to the public) is the main draw — outdoor static displays cover dozens of historic aircraft including a B-52, a B-29, and a B-17.

The annual Defenders of Liberty Air Show, held when the schedule allows, is the easiest way to see the base up close, with the Thunderbirds or other demonstration teams headlining. Check current access policies before driving over — base security is real and rules change.

A story
Barksdale is home to the 2nd Bomb Wing, which flies the B-52H Stratofortress, and to Air Force Global Strike Command headquarters. The base has been an Air Force institution since 1932 and during the Cold War sat near the top of any Soviet target list — its bomber alert pads were a constant feature of the strategic deterrent.
