Evergreen Plantation is one of the River Road plantations where the preserved architecture is inseparable from the history of slavery and sugar in Louisiana. The big house is still part of an active sugarcane plantation, but the more important reason to visit is the surviving row of antebellum slave cabins, a rare and sobering reminder of the lives that made these estates possible.
It pairs naturally with Whitney Plantation nearby, though the tone and interpretation are different. Go for the history, not just the scenery.
