Whitney Plantation is one of the most important stops on Louisiana's River Road because it puts slavery, not mansion nostalgia, at the centre of the story. The former sugar plantation includes restored buildings, memorials, and exhibits that focus on the people who were enslaved here and on the wider plantation economy.
It is a sobering visit and a necessary counterweight to the more decorative plantation tours nearby. Give it time; the value is in listening carefully, not in rushing through another old house.
